Title: Carousel

Date watched: _____________

(Note: Entering these dates is a statement that each segment was watched in its entirety, under the policy of Academic Dishonesty distributed for this course.)

1. The tale of an errant man redeemed by the love of a "good" woman is often used in books, operas, and plays. In Carousel, Billy's redemption comes only after death, but there are still strongly moral overtones to the way this story works out. What do you see them as being?

2. All the characters have strong, stereotypical attitudes of how "real men" and "ladies" should act, which reflect the American attitudes of 1945 (stage version) and 1956 (film version). State three ways these characters would be out of step in today's world (forget about wardrobe).

3. What was your favorite song from this musical? Had you heard it before?

4. Many people know the music from Carousel, since it is often performed by schools and community theaters to this day. Singing the songs and discussing the story line can form the structure for a music therapy session. Can you think of a group or diagnostic category for which this might be an especially successful activity? Why?
