Admission for Undergraduate Students
To enroll in any music major, including music therapy, at The University of Alabama, students must successfully audition for a faculty committee. It is strongly advised that auditions be undertaken before March 1. Admission to the university and to the School of Music are separate procedures and both are necessary to begin any music degree program.
The audition program should contain three works in contrasting styles that exhibit music and technical difficulty appropriate to college music study. For singers, the audition program should demonstrate the potential understanding of the classical vocal style (i.e., classical art songs sung in English and/or foreign languages).
To arrange an admission audition, please use the School of Music web link or contact the School of Music at 205-348-7110.
Students who cannot audition in person because of distance from campus may audition by tape. Tape auditions must follow the same format as live auditions and must be recorded on a high-quality cassette. Tapes must be accompanied by a completed audition application; write the words "tape audition" at the bottom.
In late Fall semester and early Spring semester, students who audition for admission will be considered automatically for music scholarships. The School of Music has its own scholarship fund and makes awards according to performing or creative talent. Awards are restricted to students enrolled in the School of Music's degree programs. Before a music scholarship can be awarded, a student must be admitted unconditionally to The University of Alabama. Specific audition dates may be obtained from the web site or by calling 205-348-7110.
